Law & Humanities Writing Workshop for Graduate Students

The CNLH invites applications for our Law & Humanities Writing Workshop taking place on March 17-18, 2023.

This two-day graduate student workshop is open to doctoral and post-graduate students at Canadian universities whose projects, themes, methodology, or approaches are at the intersection of law and the humanities, or that otherwise have a significant law and humanities component.

The workshop will take place at the Peter A. Allard School of Law, UBC Campus, and be facilitated by faculty members in various disciplines. The workshop will offer participants the chance to receive personal feedback on their writing and to discuss their work in a relaxed environment.

  • When: March 17-18, 2023
  • Where: Peter A. Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia, Vancouver
  • Cost: Free!

How It Works:

  1. Registration: if you are interested in participating, please register by February 15, 2023. Accepted participants will receive a confirmation email by February 17, 2023. Registration is free of charge
  2. Pre-Assignment: Participants should prepare to submit a short piece of academic writing (max. 6 pages) by March 1, 2023. This sample may be from an article draft, a dissertation, a chapter, a research proposal, etc. This will serve as the basis for the workshop. With this sample, you should include a short abstract (max. 500 words) of how the piece fits with your overall project and additionally explain the law and humanities dimension of your work (themes, methodology, scholarship, orientation, etc.)
  3. Workshop: Participants will be divided into small groups and assigned two faculty members per group. Discussion of each student’s writing will take place in a round-circle format and all participants will also be expected to have read each other’s work and to comment on it.

Costs and Financial Assistance: Food and beverages will be provided for all workshop attendees, but participants must arrange their own travel and accommodation, if necessary. A small stipend of up to $200 may be available to cover some of the associated costs. If you require financial assistance, please indicate this at the time of registration. Depending on available funds, allocations will be decided on the basis of need and travel distance.
